Connection with our Friends sustains our ministry

We are monks giving our whole selves to living the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are rooted in the monastic traditions of prayer and community life, while critically engaged with contemporary culture. Our monasteries offer silence, sanctuary, and simple beauty. We provide guidance in prayer and spirituality, helping people uncover their deepest desires and live with authenticity.

Our friends connect with us on retreats, workshops, worship at our monasteries, and through free audio podcasts of our sermons available, Listen Online. We greet our Friends when we travel on mission. They receive the Cowley magazine, the brothers' quarterly, and occasional electronic newsletters.

We depend on our friends and benefactors for the financial support of the life and ministry of SSJE. The brothers have two large properties that serve as retreat centers, (the monastery in Cambridge and Emery House in West Newbury, MA). In round numbers the Society of Saint John the Evangelist has a two million dollar budget that covers running both properties, looking after 17-21 monks, staff and all SSJE ministries. The brothers have endowment whose draw is limited to the prudent level of 4.5%-5% which funds about 40% of the annual budget. We rely on Friends to donate to the Annual Fund to fund another 40% of the budget. Guesthouse income contributes about 15% of the budget and 5% comes from other sources. Cowley Publications has always been a ministry of SSJE and not a revenue source. Friends’ gifts make it possible for us to welcome all.

We welcome and appreciate all gifts of any amount. If able, please prayfully consider an annual commitment of $500 or more.  We will acknowledge all donors by name, but not amount in our Annual Fund report.  We rely on your gifts to the annual fund to support SSJE operations and ministries.  We are grateful if you will consider giving at one of the following levels:

  • Annual gifts of $500 - $999
  • Annual gifts of $1,000 - $2,499
  • Annual gifts of $2,500 – and above
