A Capital Campaign for the Monastery

A Word from the Campaign Co-Chairs, Winter 2010

This is a moment of great hope and expectation for SSJE and the Stone & Light Capital Campaign to restore the Monastery. In short, the Society has received three generous challenge grants which will more than double any pledge you make. Thus, we write with some urgency to those who have already given and those who have never given. With your help, we will be able to complete this phase of the campaign and begin construction.

As you are perhaps aware, the Monastery as a useable building is close to the end of its life. Most evident to even the casual visitor are rotting window frames, outdated wiring, an ineffective and expensive heating system, and the fact that there is no disability access. A more comprehensive examination reveals a Chapel roof in desperate need of repair, decaying mortar in the bell tower, inadequate lighting and security issues. To renovate the Monastery in a sensitive, environmentally friendly way and meet code is a $10M+ proposition.

Three donors have joined to issue a remarkable and generous challenge. Together these three will more than double any pledge or gift you make. We now have only $1,000,000 to go to enable the Brothers to proceed.

Though it may well seem to be a difficult time for such an appeal, particularly to those who have already given so much, we write to ask for your renewed support as we take advantage of this unforeseen and remarkable opportunity. Please consider making a financial commitment or adding to an existing multi-year pledge.

Br. Curtis Almquist, Superior of the SSJE, will be stepping down in May after nine-years as Superior. He has led the Society in a quest to renew its commitment to be “men of the moment” and to renovate the Monastery. With your help we can be sure the Brothers have the necessary resources to realize this vision of renewal and renovation by the time he leaves office.

As well, we want you to know of the deep and continuing gratitude we, along with the Brothers, have for the generosity of so many of you who have given to both the Annual Fund and the Stone & Light Campaign.
