Gifts from God

A series of three workshops celebrating the gifts that God offers us will be held at the monastery on Saturday mornings, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Participants are invited to stay and join the Brothers for the Midday Office at 12:30 p.m. following the workshop.

The suggested fee for each of these Saturday morning workshops is $40 ($20 for students).

Full-day workshop at the Monastery:

The Pastoral Art of Hearing Confessions – a workshop for priests and seminarians –
Br. Curtis Almquist, SSJE: February 18, 2012 (9:00 am-3:30 pm)

This full-day workshop will focus on both the theology of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and its practice. It will cover topics such as: for whom the Sacrament will be helpful, what the penitent and confessor anticipate, how the “boundaries” of the Sacrament are designated and maintained, when the need for forgiveness (unbinding) and healing (binding up) overlap, the words and gestures that accompany the ministration, and the aftermath of the confession. Suggested fee: $65, includes lunch.

Programs at Emery House

Emery House will be open throughout the program year (September 2011 through July 2012) for individual and small group retreats. In addition, we will be offering three special programs:

Introduction to a Silent Retreat – Br. Luke Ditewig, n/SSJE;
Friday 5 pm to Sunday 2 pm; March 2-4, 2012.
If you haven’t yet come on retreat with us because it’s new or daunting, this weekend is for you. Br. Luke will gently usher you into the experience of silence and solitude, offering instructions and thoughtful meditations along the way, and suggesting ways you might experiment with prayer between sessions. The brothers will welcome you to join them in worship and at meals.
Suggested fee: $250.

Behold the Beauty of the Lord – an intensive icon-writing retreat – Br. James Koester, SSJE; Tuesday 5 pm to Sunday 2 pm; March 6-11, 2012.
During this week-long intensive icon-writing workshop, participants will be introduced to the technique of creating an icon. They will learn and experience the various steps of writing an icon, and will also gain an understanding of the theology and spirituality of icons. Registration is limited to six participants. All materials will be provided.
Suggested fee: $675.
