When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless, like…
Sheep without a shepherd.
Students without a teacher,
Children without a parent,
Eggs without a brooding mother,
Warriors without a commander,
Citizens without a leader,
Treasure without a guardian,
Inheritance without an heir.
Characters without an author,
Books without a reader,
Object with no Subject or Verb,
Paintings without a viewer,
Dancers without a choreographer,
Flames without a wick,
Arrows without an archer,
Fish without water,
Bees without a hive,
Roots without soil,
Leaves without sunlight,
Houses without walls,
Doors without handles or knobs,
Flesh without bone,
Lungs without oxygen,
A Body without a heart.
Potential without purpose,
Lover without Beloved,
Sound without sense,
Illness without medicine, treatment, or vaccine,
Night without Dawn –
so are we without You,
God for whom we wait,
and our suffering without your compassion.
Students educated well,
Children nurtured,
Chicks emerging from their shells,
Warriors given victory,
Citizens empowered,
Treasure prized and protected,
Inheritance passing to its rightful heir.
Characters leaping off the page,
Books read and relished,
Subject, object, & verb in order,
Paintings gazed upon,
Dancers moving as one,
Flames that burn bright,
Arrows that fly far,
Fish that swim free,
Bees producing honey,
Roots drawing water,
Leaves soaked in sunlight,
Houses sheltering households,
Doors that open,
Flesh with vigor,
Lungs with breath,
Body with beating heart.
Vocation found,
Lover with Beloved joined,
Sound and sense yielding recognition,
Illness cured,
The sun rising,
and the sheep led safely home –
so shall we be
on that Day.
Come, Lord Jesus. Amen.
