St. Francis of Assisi: Contagious Love

Saint Francis is one of the most famous saints of all time. Francis is famous for not only founding the order of the Franciscans, but Francis is famous for leading an incredible life. It is hard to separate truth from exaggeration when we talk about Francis, but one thing is clear, Francis lived a holy life, devoted to God.

We see images of Saint Francis all the time, usually surrounded by animals and nature. Here at our monastery in Cambridge, we have both a stained-glass window of Francis as well as a statue of Francis in our guesthouse garden. Both our statue and our stained-glass window feature Francis holding a bird next to his chest with great care.

So what is it about Saint Francis? How did he become the popular saint? How did he become one of the most respected figures in the history of the church? My own answer to those questions is that Francis’ love, passion, and enthusiasm were contagious. Personally, whenever I look at our stained glass window of Francis, and I see his faced turned to heaven, I just instantly feel a little bit uplifted. Looking at Francis feels like a breath of fresh air.

Francis’ love, passion, and enthusiasm were contagious.

Saint Francis is also a good reminder in the religious life, you have to be a little crazy at times. Some times you have to go a little wild with God. I had a spiritual director tell me one time that no one normal becomes a monk. I think he meant that as a compliment, but it is certainly true.

Saint Francis is a good reminder that we have to make the most of our time here on earth for the greater glory of God. Francis was famous for his poverty, for taking whatever was put in front of him and making the best out of it for the sake of God. Saint Francis, pray for us.

Questions for Reflection

Saint Francis embraced a radical, even “crazy” life for God, and it transformed him.

How is God calling you to step out of your comfort zone?

What might be the “wild” thing God is asking you to do in your own life?

Saint Francis embraced poverty and simplicity, making the best out of whatever came his way.

In what areas of your life can you embrace simplicity and gratitude for what you have?

How can you make the most of each moment to glorify God?

Saint Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) is accompanied by birds and the wolf of Gubbio, recalling his compassion for all created things. He had a consuming zeal for Jesus Christ, and the medallion shows Saint Francis receiving the stigmata.

The fire of love, a gift from God, burns brightly in me this morning. I am grateful.
