Welcome to the Society
of Saint John the Evangelist

We are a community of men giving our whole selves over to living the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Rooted in the ancient monastic traditions of prayer and community life, and critically engaged with contemporary culture, we seek to know and share an authentic experience of God’s love and mercy. We live a common life shaped by worship, prayer, and our Rule of Life.

We invite you to explore these pages to learn more about how we live and pray, the tradition that grounds us, and the call that draws us onward day by day.

Hypocrisy

Hypocrisy is right at the top of those things which make Jesus angry because he knows how very destructive it can be to a person. Keeping up appearances can grow into something corrosive to the soul. If we try to live a life of pretense, in order to be accepted or praised, we run the risk of losing our souls.

On Christian Proficiency – Br. Keith Nelson

October 11, 2026 |

The call to transformation appeals to many, but the journey to proficiency – that is, actual change – tests us at every stage.

Using the parable of the wedding banquet in Matthew, Br. Keith Nelson reimagines the church as a spiritual dojo where discipleship is an ongoing spectrum of growth where the stumbles and bruises add up to a larger whole. He identifies three pitfalls that stall our spiritual progress – declining God’s daily invitations, settling for idols in moments of impatience, and holding back total commitment – and calls us to a wholehearted, deepening “yes.”

Listening, Like Mary – Br. James Koester

October 10, 2026 |

Mary was obedient, not in the sense that she simply did what she was told to do, like a five-year-old, but because she listened deeply to the call of God, and bravely responded with her ‘yes,’ even though she did not understand the ultimate consequences.

Br. James Koester defends the deeply Anglican nature of honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary, connecting her presence to the core mystery of the Incarnation. He interprets Jesus’ words in the Gospel not as a rebuke of Mary, but as an invitation for each of us to listen deeply to God’s voice and respond with a brave, unreserved “yes.”

The Silence and Solitude of Saint Bruno – Br. Curtis Almquist

October 6, 2026 |

Most important in life is not the new, nor the next, but the now, where now can be enough.

Reflecting on the Feast of Saint Bruno and the semi-hermetic Carthusian tradition, Br. Curtis Almquist offers an antidote to our distraction-saturated world. He urges us to carve out daily spaces of silence and solitude to practice the presence of God in the present moment.

It is in Giving that we Receive – Br. Keith Nelson

October 4, 2026 |

If your life feels cluttered with complexity, it may be as meaningful as it is countercultural to embrace a renewed simplicity – an identity that does not depend on what you own, but what you choose to give.

Preaching on the parable of the wicked tenants and the Feast of Saint Francis, Br. Keith Nelson confronts supersessionist (the Christian doctrine stating that the Church has replaced or superseded the Jewish people as God’s covenanted people) readings of Scripture and exposes the destructive illusion of possessiveness. He invites us into “Eucharistic living” and total self-offering, finding true freedom not in accumulation, but in radical generosity and thanksgiving.

Stripping Naked – Br. Lain Wilson

October 4, 2026 |

What we have to gain – a coming to know ourselves as we truly are, made in the image and likeness of God – is beyond price.

Br. Lain Wilson reflects on Saint Francis’s renunciation as a call to let go of pride, self-sufficiency, and the divisions we create between ourselves and the rest of creation.

Taking Rejection with a Grain of Salt – Br. Jack Crowley

October 2, 2026 |

I would argue that Jesus took rejection with a grain of salt, and we must do the same.

Br.Jack Crowley reflects on Jesus’ warning that his disciples will face rejection and encourages us not to take it personally or let old wounds turn into bitterness. Instead, we can keep reorienting ourselves toward God.

Point Together – Br. Luke Ditewig

September 29, 2026 |

Jesus is the point, and angels point to Jesus. Dazzling as they may be, they point to Jesus, intimate and other, mysterious Word made flesh.

Preaching on the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels, Br. Luke Ditewig reflects on Jacob’s ladder and Jesus’ words to Nathanael, showing that angels serve primarily to direct our attention to Christ. In Jesus, heaven is already opened, uniting the divine and earthly realms and assuring us that we are never alone.

How Much More – Br. Lain Wilson

September 27, 2026 |

I can read about all the angels sent to and fro in Scripture, but a God who still sends angels is a God who can fundamentally challenge all my expectations.

From Jacob’s ladder to celestial battles and daily acts of mercy, Br. Lain Wilson suggests angels reveal the boundless “how much more” of God’s presence, calling us to bear that same restorative love, that same angelic witness in our everyday lives.

On Worthwhile Questions & the Mind of Christ – Br. Keith Nelson

September 25, 2026 |

Jesus offers answers – but they come to those who are willing to ask hard questions, and to follow those questions wherever they lead, even to the foot of the cross.

Preaching at Church of the Holy Comforter, Br. Keith Nelson examines Christ’s habit of answering questions with deeper questions, linking it to the self-emptying (kenosis) praised in Paul’s letter to the Philippians. He invites the parish to adopt a shared Rule of Life, reminding them that cultivating the mind of Christ is an ongoing communal practice rather than an individual burden.
