Welcome to “A Living Tradition,” an online conversation with the Brothers of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist, discussing our experience and practice of living our Rule of Life. We’re pleased that you have joined us and hope that you will also avail yourself of the recorded version of our Rule of Life, as one of your Lenten practices. It’s available here.
First offered in Lent 2011, we posted a short “living commentary” on our Rule, with a Brother or two offering his unique perspective on the document which shapes and forms our prayer and practice more than any other apart from Scripture and The Book of Common Prayer.
From time to time, we’ll also be offering some other food for thought, including:
- Reflections on living a rule from members of the Fellowship of Saint John, our wider circle of friends of SSJE who live their Christian lives under a rule that is based on ours.
- Some history of how we came to have the Rule we have, published in 1997.
A few suggestions for ways in which you might utilize our Rule as a basis for one tailored to your life and ministry. - And, finally, every few days, a bit of Lenten trivia for your reflection and enjoyment, a reminder that the liturgical year itself is “a living tradition,” one to be taken seriously—but not too seriously.
