We Brothers have long enjoyed welcoming guests to join us at Emery House. Located on the border of West Newbury and Newburyport, Emery House provides a quiet atmosphere for prayer, reflection, and retreat.

September 2022: We are excited to announce that, after several years of prayerful discernment, the community has made the decision to revive our ministry at Emery House. As a first step in that process, a small group of brothers will re-establish a residential community there in January. We anticipate opening our guest ministry at Emery House sometime in the spring of 2023. We will be making an announcement about further steps later in the Fall. We ask for your patience as those details emerge, and for your prayers as we respond to God’s call in West Newbury.

Our Formation and Renewal: with a pause on guest ministry at Emery House

Our founder Richard Meux Benson led us to be “men of the moment.” In 2019-20, we are setting aside periods of time to discuss and refresh our vision of what it means to be SSJE Brothers today. Our monastery guesthouse and chapel in Cambridge continue to operate as usual, and we are pausing our guest ministry at Emery House. We ask for your ongoing prayers and support during this season of our formation and renewal.

Emery House is situated over 150 acres, bounded by the Merrimack River on the north, by the Artichoke River on the east, and by Route 113 on the south.
