  • We have a preference you make a minimum of two-night stay to more fully enter into the retreat, and do not accept Saturday arrivals.
  • Reservations are confirmed only upon receipt of a deposit equal to 50% of your total fee.
  • We ask that you request only one retreat per year to allow everyone the opportunity to share in our ministry. Thank you.

“You, O Lord, are my lamp; my God, you make my darkness bright.” Psalm 18:29

Loving, Disciplined, & Free: A Retreat for Men: May 29-June 1, 2025

Location: Emery House in West Newbury
Thursday 5:00 pm – Sunday 2:00 pm, May 29-June 1, 2025
Leader: Br. Keith Nelson, Br. Lucas Hall, & Br. Jack Crowley

Our SSJE Rule of Life holds before us the hope of “attaining maturity as loving, disciplined, and free men.” What does a mature, non-patriarchal men’s spirituality look like at this moment in human history? How can our leadership, mentoring, learning, praying and loving – as men of God– become a more authentic expression of Christ’s own compassionate strength?

We’ll seek answers to these questions in scripture and in the rich traditions of monastic spirituality, in sacred images and archetypes, and in our own personal stories. Join us as we celebrate the diversity of our manhood, reconnect with our God, and renew our vision of God’s future.

We strive to make retreat time available to all who seek it, and so the suggested fees cover only a portion of the expenses for making our facilities available. As such, we are always grateful for any additional donations in support of our retreat ministry.

Praying with the Psalms: May 9-11, 2025

Location: The Monastery in Cambridge
Friday 5:00 pm – Sunday 2:00 pm, May 9-11, 2025
Leader: Brs. Jamie Nelson and Jonathan Maury

For over 3,000 years, God’s people have prayed with the anthology of poetry we know as the book of Psalms. The gospels recount Jesus quoting from the psalms many times. From their earliest origins, monastic communities have prayed the psalms as “the heart of the Daily Office,” as SSJE’s Rule states. Through reading, listening, chanting, and creative practice, we will deepen our relationship with the psalms as a pathway of prayer.

We strive to make retreat time available to all who seek it, and so the suggested fees cover only a portion of the expenses for making our facilities available. As such, we are always grateful for any additional donations in support of our retreat ministry.

Location: The Monastery in Cambridge
Tuesday 5:00 pm – Saturday 2:00 pm, March 13-16, 2025

During the fourth century, thousands of men and women left their homes to live and pray in the Egyptian desert. Why did they go? What did they find? This retreat will draw on the desert experience of Jesus and teachings of these early monastics to explore the relevance of desert spirituality for our own day.

Location: The Monastery in Cambridge
Friday 5:00 pm – Sunday 2:00 pm, February 14-16, 2025
Leader: Br. Geoffrey Tristram

Life can be so busy and rushed that we lose touch with those deep sources of vitality and replenishment through which God longs to refresh and delight us.  This weekend will be an opportunity to slow down and be still, to listen to the voice of Jesus, and deepen our connection with the God who knows and loves us.  This is ideal for those who have never been on silent retreat before.

We strive to make retreat time available to all who seek it, and so the suggested fees cover only a portion of the expenses for making our facilities available. As such, we are always grateful for any additional donations in support of our retreat ministry.

The Revelation to John & the Christian Imagination: November 14-17, 2024

Location: The Monastery in Cambridge
Thursday 5:00 pm – Sunday 2:00 pm, November 14-17, 2024
Leader: Br. Keith Nelson

“Behold, a door in heaven stood open!” (Revelation 4:1)

The final book of Christian scripture is a profound, visionary, and oft-misunderstood text. Interpreted as a literal forecast of history’s cataclysmic finale, it feels like very bad news. But a significant lineage of faithful interpreters have charted another road through its landscape. The Revelation to John offers a way toward the refurbishing of the Christian imagination through the power of image, story, and transformative encounter with Christ as the origin and consummation of all things. In this retreat, we’ll boldly step through Revelation’s open door.

We strive to make retreat time available to all who seek it, and so the suggested fees cover only a portion of the expenses for making our facilities available. As such, we are always grateful for any additional donations in support of our retreat ministry.
