I was inspired to lead a Sunday morning forum at the Parish of the Epiphany in Winchester MA using the compilation videos as a springboard for discussion. It was held during our Adult Education hour right after the main service. We had a group of about a dozen people. Our discussions were rich and deep. Sometimes we focused especially on just one of the questions because that one seemed to “grab” people most. Other times we talked about all of them.

I want to thank you all for the careful way you put this series together. It was perfect for congregational use. The design was beautifully simple. It didn’t confuse with too much material. But there was ample “fodder” there to fill a church discussion hour each week. The questions were such that they could be appropriate for many different levels of spiritual growth. The openness, honesty, and vulnerability of the brothers set the tone for the group to share their own experience. Whatever the level of the group, the questions were accessible and could stimulate thoughtful reflection. In the four sessions we were able to schedule, I noticed that trust built within the group and the discussions went deeper with each one. I think the group would have liked to have more meetings. If you create another series, I will certainly try to organize a group to follow it. For the congregational leader, it’s a dream come true –the first “new thing” I’ve liked, and just exactly what I was looking for! Meaningful small group gathering is so very much needed.

My group was composed mostly of non-techie people who did not access the material online before coming to the class. I had thought it would be a good way to introduce “distance” learning or online access to materials to the congregation. But more than half of my group were seeing the videos for the first time on Sunday morning. I think it did introduce combining video and in-person sharing very well. It will be a step by step progression for most. But the group agreed that the chance to share the videos in the group and discuss them together was crucial to the meaningfulness of their experience.

For myself, I found the thoughts and comments of the online blog mostly spiritually nourishing. I enjoyed being a part of a large online SSJE-friendly community. Unfortunately, I think only one other in my group ever looked at the blog.

I would also appreciate some kind of online (or actual) sharing group for congregational leaders. I would love to hear/see/participate in reflection on leading the series, leading small groups in this kind of reflection work, etc.

My Parishes do not have an active website, is it possible to download the compilation videos without this?

      Hi Ruby,

Thanks for the question. Here are two options to share with your parish. If you or someone in the community has a laptop which could be used, the videos can be downloaded and shared with folks that way. We’ve heard from several parishes who are setting up times during the week to gather and watch as a group and meditate or discuss together. Another option might be that you could print the PDF file as a handout to distribute to parishoners. They could then download the videos at their homes, and perhaps on Sundays or some other time during the week, people could get together and discuss them as a group and share their thoughts and reflections.

You can download the videos by clicking this link and filling out the very brief form:

Please let us know if you experience any difficulty or wish to share feedback.

Our parish is looking to use your program for weekly quiet hours during Lent (as well as offering the daily messages to members). Do you know how far in advance the weekly compilation videos will be available each week? We’re struggling a bit with how to adapt your format to an hour of perhaps four presentations with periods of silence.

      Hi Lawrence,
so glad that you are interested in using the Love Life series during Lent. I think that we get it to work.

The compilation videos are now available – if you fill in this form I can share them with you. https://ssje.wufoo.com/forms/s1cdu6e40pz28w4/

The compilation videos are divided into 5 parts based on the five daily offerings, with some clear places to pause between offering – could you do 5 instead of 4 presentations in an hour? The compilation videos are around 10 mins each, so you could get around 10 mins between each one.

Thank you for the wonderful gift of this Lenten study. Our church is using it for our Lenten series and we are offering 2 different group opportunities each week.
Perfect for people to plug in when and where they can and then come together as community to share our thoughts and prayers.

Thank you, Br Geoffrey! We are excited to make this a part of our Lenten offerings at the Parish of the Epiphany in Winchester. Do you have the videos gathered onto a DVD? That would be helpful for use in our Adult Formation group. Gayle

We are very excited about offering this great lenten series. It will work on two levels for our Parish. Those who cannot attend the weekly meetings can do so at home on their computers and those that don’t have computers can join us for a soup, salad and breadstick dinner with presentation/discussion. We think it will be a huge success. Thank you so much for taking time to offer such a wonderful program.

Is there a reading guide for participants to read the Gospel of John over hte 5 weeks? Thanks for this!

    Br Geoffrey,
Thank you for this beautiful gift. It is obvious that this is a big project that was developed with great skill abd sensitivity for adult learners. I shared this in my EfM class and there was great enthusiasm. One member is proposing it at his church. By any chance is there a Spanish version? With warmest appreciation, Sandra

Wow! This program was just shared with me by a colleague who attended the Forma Conference, and we will definitely be using it for our Lenten series this year as a parish. Thank you so much!
