Hospitality is about offering our hearts. It is being present to another. It does not need a table, food, or particular place. It is taking time and giving intention. Hospitality can be spontaneous and anywhere, on the street, in a store, and on Zoom. We Brothers are delighted to be able to offer, once again, the unique hospitality of in-person presence in our Monastery in Cambridge with Program Retreats in addition other online programs to nurture and sustain faith. Please take a look through each of our programs below and watch for further offerings.

During this retreat, we will learn and practice traditional forms of prayer, including meditative reading (lectio divina) and imaginative prayer. These practices open us to a deep awareness of how God is speaking to us and inviting us to relationship with all of creation.

Negotiating Our Dual Citizenship: The Spirituality of Mark’s Gospel: October 31-November 3, 2024

Jesus lived in a matrix of vying political powers – religious factions and the oppressing occupation of the Roman Empire. Jesus was very politically savvy when he proclaimed, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near.” How do we negotiate our “dual citizenship” in our own day as we live amidst such competing, sometimes acrimonious political rivalries? We will draw upon the Gospel of Mark and how it informs and inspires us to live hopefully, faithfully, and powerfully in our own day.

“Behold, a door in heaven stood open!” (Revelation 4:1)

The final book of Christian scripture is a profound, visionary, and oft-misunderstood text. Interpreted as a literal forecast of history’s cataclysmic finale, it feels like very bad news. But a significant lineage of faithful interpreters have charted another road through its landscape. The Revelation to John offers a way toward the refurbishing of the Christian imagination through the power of image, story, and transformative encounter with Christ as the origin and consummation of all things. In this retreat, we’ll boldly step through Revelation’s open door.

For over 3,000 years, God’s people have prayed with the anthology of poetry we know as the book of Psalms. The gospels recount Jesus quoting from the psalms many times. From their earliest origins, monastic communities have prayed the psalms as “the heart of the Daily Office,” as SSJE’s Rule states. Through reading, listening, chanting, and creative practice, we will deepen our relationship with the psalms as a pathway of prayer.

Loving, Disciplined, & Free: A Retreat for Men: May 29-June 1, 2025

Cost: $425 full | $225 student

Led by Br. Keith Nelson, Br. Lucas Hall, & Br. Jack Crowley

Our SSJE Rule of Life holds before us the hope of “attaining maturity as loving, disciplined, and free men.” What does a mature, non-patriarchal men’s spirituality look like at this moment in human history? How can our leadership, mentoring, learning, praying and loving – as men of God– become a more authentic expression of Christ’s own compassionate strength?

We’ll seek answers to these questions in scripture and in the rich traditions of monastic spirituality, in sacred images and archetypes, and in our own personal stories. Join us as we celebrate the diversity of our manhood, reconnect with our God, and renew our vision of God’s future.
