All Is Gift

As Brothers, we take three vows, including a vow of poverty. Through this vow, we understand that all is gift. Everything, including our very life, is a gift from God. We believe that there is an important lesson for us in framing our life in this way, which stands in contrast to a worldly understanding in which so much of life is a transaction.

Seeing life as a gift enhances our ability cultivate a posture of gratitude. From that perspective, we more readily accept how little of life is actually within our control. There is freedom in this, in how it allows for God to move freely in and through our lives.

In this spirit of giving, we Brothers offer our ministry freely to all; our hospitality, sermons, spirituality, worship and wisdom are all aspects of the work we offer, both in-person and online. We in turn rely on the generosity and kindness of friends to support us. We believe this balance of mutual reliance transforms us all. Self-sufficiency is a dangerous delusion. We are all interdependent. In acknowledging our need, we see more clearly how the tapestry of our life is woven into the greater tapestry of the Church and the world.

The Fiscal Facts

The Society of Saint John the Evangelist current operating budget is approximately $2.2 million. This budget supports the operation of two large properties that serve as retreat centers (the Monastery in Cambridge and Emery House in West Newbury), provides for 20 monks and monastic interns, and funds all SSJE ministries. The brothers are blessed with an endowment, and are committed to an endowment draw that, in real terms, provides a steady and predictable income stream to support SSJE’s activities in perpetuity. The final stages of a decade-long plan are in place that will see the reduction of the draw to a sustainable level of 4%. The endowment supports 35% of the annual budget. Other sources of revenue (including the Guesthouse operation) fund an additional 17%. This means that the Community relies on Friends who donate to the Annual Fund to sustain 48% of the budget. Friends gifts make it possible for the Brothers to welcome all.
